Mental health apparel for men: brands, messages and what to look for

A UK guide to men's mental health clothing: independent brands, meaningful messages, fit and how to check what your purchase actually supports.

Mental health apparel for men usually means hoodies, T-shirts or caps carrying a message about the things men can find hard to say out loud. You might search for mental health clothing, a mental health hoodie or streetwear with a purpose. The useful question is the same: does the message mean something to you, and is this a garment you'll actually wear?

You don't have to explain your story to wear it. A message can be personal, a way to show solidarity or an opening for a conversation. It is not treatment, and clothing itself does not prevent suicide or improve mental health.

Independent brands worth exploring

Several independent names sit in this space, with different approaches to awareness. These are examples to explore, not a ranking or an endorsement. HHSS wrote this guide, so we have an interest in the clothing ourselves; the brand summaries below come from each brand's own published pages, checked on 9 October 2026.

Happiness Project sells message-led apparel, including a ‘Your Mind Matters’ hoodie. Its product page describes clothing intended to keep mental health at the forefront and normalise conversations. If a direct, readable statement is what you're looking for, its collection is one place to explore.

Head Above The Waves is a not-for-profit raising awareness of depression and self-harm in young people. It describes its clothing as ‘merchandise with a message’ and talks about community and conversation. Its focus is not exclusively men, but its approach is relevant to anyone looking for clothing with an awareness message.

Stay Another Day describes itself as a family-owned mental health awareness brand. Its message T-shirt uses a letter to the person behind the wearer: an outward-facing reminder that someone is not alone. That is a different approach from a small logo or a message kept close to the person wearing it.

These brands are independent of HHSS. Check their current product pages for sizing, stock, shipping to the UK and any donation terms; this guide does not assume they all make the same commitments or offer the same fit.

Choose a message you can stand behind

Some mental health apparel speaks to the wearer; some speaks to everyone around them. Neither needs to be loud to matter. Think about whether you want a visible sentence, back artwork or a more understated front design. There is no obligation to turn getting dressed into a public conversation.

For HHSS, the words are Heavy Heart, Strong Soul. Built From Broken. You Are Enough. Broken doesn't mean finished. They express what the brand stands for, not a promise that buying a hoodie will make a difficult day disappear.

Check the garment, not just the slogan

Look for clear fabric information, actual measurements and photographs showing the artwork. GSM describes fabric weight in grams per square metre; it does not tell you everything about quality. Fit, construction and how you care for the garment matter too.

HHSS hoodies use heavyweight loopback fleece, with a small chest design and full-back Heavy Heart Strong Soul artwork. ONYX is black, BONE is off-white and ASH is grey. Choose your usual size for the intended oversized, boxy fit, or size down for a closer fit, and check the size guide before ordering.

  • Check the size chart rather than assuming every brand's ‘oversized’ means the same thing.
  • For UK orders, check delivery charges, dispatch times and the returns policy before checkout.
  • If ordering from overseas, check whether tax or import charges are included.
  • Choose something that works with the clothes you already wear, not just a slogan you like online.

What does the purchase actually support?

‘Raising awareness’ and ‘donating money’ are different commitments. If a brand says it gives back, look for a named recipient and a clear amount or calculation. A positive message alone does not tell you where any money goes.

HHSS is proud to support Man Down UK, a non-profit Community Interest Company providing free peer-led men's mental-health support groups. £5 from every hoodie, £3 from every T-shirt, £2 from every cap and £1 from every car window sticker is donated by HHSS to Man Down UK, supporting its free peer-support groups for men. Those donations do not fund the help lines listed below.

The HHSS prices are £55 for a hoodie, £30 for a T-shirt, £22 for a cap and £5 for a car window sticker. You can read who we support and see the donation totals through the links below.

Where HHSS fits in — and what is available now

HHSS is UK streetwear rooted in the founder's lived experience, with heavyweight clothing and a men's mental health message. It is for people who connect with Heavy Heart, Strong Soul, rather than a claim to be better than another awareness brand.

Car window stickers are in stock and dispatch within 1–2 working days. Drop 01 is live — early-access members are shopping first; sign up and your private link arrives straight away.

Drop 01 opens to everyone on 18 October 2026 at 7pm, with early access for sign-ups from 16 October at 7pm. There are 150 pieces in the drop: 50 hoodies, 50 T-shirts and 50 caps. If the clothes and message feel right for you, the shop has the early-access sign-up.

If you need support, you don't need to buy anything

A purchase is never a condition of getting help. In the UK, call Samaritans free on 116 123, 24 hours a day, or text SHOUT to 85258 for free, 24/7 text support. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E.
