Suicide awareness hoodie: what the designs and symbols mean
What makes a suicide awareness hoodie, what the common designs stand for, and how the HHSS suicide prevention hoodie gives back to Man Down UK.
A suicide awareness hoodie works through recognition. Someone sees the design, knows what it means, and understands the wearer is safe to talk to. Here's what the most common symbols stand for, and how a suicide prevention hoodie differs.
Suicide awareness hoodie vs suicide prevention hoodie
People use the two names interchangeably for awareness clothing. Neither means a garment prevents suicide or treats mental-health conditions. HHSS carries a message that can start a conversation, and £5 from every £55 hoodie goes to Man Down UK, a men's mental health non-profit. Every purchase helps support Man Down UK's work supporting men's mental health.
The symbols you'll see
Most awareness clothing in the UK draws on a small set of symbols:
- The semicolon — a sentence the author could have ended, but didn't. Adopted widely by survivors.
- The teal and purple ribbon — the international suicide awareness and prevention ribbon.
- Yellow — used by UK youth suicide prevention campaigns and remembrance events.
- Slogan text — direct lines about talking, checking in, or staying.
The HHSS artwork
HHSS uses gothic thorn artwork with 'Heavy Heart Strong Soul' and 'Built From Broken'. It's deliberately not a ribbon: the point is a piece you'd wear anyway, that says something to the people who recognise it and nothing loud to those who don't.
It's a high-quality print on heavyweight loopback fleece, sized M to 2XL. £5 from every hoodie goes to Man Down UK.
Wearing it responsibly
If you wear awareness clothing, be ready for the conversation it can start. You don't need training or the right words — you need to listen and know where to point someone. Samaritans (116 123), CALM (0800 58 58 58) and Shout (text SHOUT to 85258) are free and open to anyone in the UK.
