When is Men's Mental Health Month in the UK?

June or November? The honest answer on Men's Mental Health Month in the UK, the key dates each year, and simple ways to take part that actually help.

Short answer: there isn't one single official Men's Mental Health Month in the UK. Most people mean June, when Men's Health Month and Men's Health Week run, or November, when Movember and International Men's Day put men's mental health front and centre. Both are good times to talk about it. So is any other month.

June: Men's Health Month and Men's Health Week

June is widely marked as Men's Health Month, and it's the month most people mean when they search for Men's Mental Health Month. In the UK, Men's Health Week runs in mid-June, in the week leading up to Father's Day. Each year it picks a theme, and mental health comes up again and again.

November: Movember and International Men's Day

In the UK, November is when men's mental health gets the most attention. Movember runs all month, with people growing moustaches or setting activity challenges to raise money for men's mental health and suicide prevention. International Men's Day falls on 19 November every year.

Is Men's Mental Health Month in June?

Yes, in the sense most people mean. June is Men's Health Month, and in many countries (especially the US) it gets called Men's Mental Health Month. In the UK, Men's Health Week falls in the middle of June and always ends on Father's Day, which is the third Sunday in June. If you've seen "Men's Mental Health Awareness Month June" on social media, this is what it's about.

Is Men's Mental Health Month in November?

Also yes. Lots of people in the UK think of November as men's mental health month because of Movember, which raises money for men's mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer. International Men's Day is on 19 November. So if someone says "men's mental health awareness month November", they're not wrong either.

Other dates worth knowing

  • Mental Health Awareness Week — May, run by the Mental Health Foundation.
  • World Suicide Prevention Day — 10 September.
  • World Mental Health Day — 10 October.
  • Blue Monday — the third Monday in January, a good prompt to check in on someone.

Why it matters

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK, and around three quarters of UK suicides are men. The main barrier usually isn't a lack of services. It's saying the first sentence out loud. Awareness months help because they give people permission to start that conversation.

How to take part (any month)

You don't need a campaign to do something useful. A few things that genuinely help:

  • Message one mate you haven't heard from in a while. Ask twice if the first answer is "fine".
  • Go for a walk or a drive together. Men often talk more easily side by side than face to face.
  • Find a local peer-support group. Man Down UK runs free, informal groups for men 18+ in 45+ locations across the UK.
  • Save one number you can pass on: Samaritans, 116 123, free, 24/7.
  • Wear something that starts the conversation. Every HHSS purchase donates to Man Down UK: £5 per hoodie, £3 per tee, £2 per cap and £1 per sticker.

If you're struggling right now

Call Samaritans on 116 123, call CALM on 0800 58 58 58, or text SHOUT to 85258. If you're in immediate danger, call 999. You don't have to wait for an awareness month to ask for help.
