Boys cry too: why men's mental health clothing says it out loud
Suicide is still the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Here's why HHSS puts the message on a hoodie instead of a poster — and what to do when a mate goes quiet.
Suicide remains the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Most of the men it takes never said anything out loud first. That is the gap HHSS was built around.
Boys cry too is a fact, not a slogan
Men cry, panic, spiral and get scared like everybody else. What is different is how early the conversation gets shut down and how long the silence then lasts. Saying it plainly on a chest print takes about two seconds and does something a leaflet does not: it makes the subject normal in a room full of blokes.
HHSS stands for Heavy Heart, Strong Soul — clothing that makes space for honest conversations.
Why clothing works where campaigns stall
Awareness weeks come and go. A heavyweight hoodie in the wash cycle every week keeps showing up — at the gym, on the school run, in the van. The person wearing it does not owe anyone an explanation, but the people who recognise it know the door is open.
How to check in on a mate
You do not need the right words. You need to ask and then stop talking:
- Ask directly — asking about suicide does not plant the idea.
- Listen without fixing, minimising or comparing it to someone else's situation.
- Help them make one call: Samaritans, CALM, their GP or 111.
- Text again a few days later. The follow-up matters more than the first chat.
What your order funds
£5 from every £55 hoodie, £3 from every £30 T-shirt, £2 from every £22 cap and £1 from every £5 car window sticker goes to Man Down UK. It is built into the price. Spend over £50 and a car sticker goes in the box free.
