How clothing can start a mental health conversation
What to wear when you want to support men's mental health — and how a back print or car sticker can give a mate the opening to say 'you alright?'
The hardest part of talking about mental health is usually the first sentence. Clothing can't say it for you — but it can make the first sentence easier for someone else.
A quiet signal
When someone reads Built From Broken on your back or your car window, they learn something without anyone saying a word: this person gets it, or has been there, or at least won't flinch. For someone who's struggling, that can be the difference between keeping quiet and asking.
What to wear to support men's mental health
- Something you'd genuinely wear every week — a message in a drawer does nothing.
- A line that invites a question rather than preaching an answer.
- Something from a brand that's open about where the money goes.
- A car window sticker, if clothing isn't your thing — it's seen by everyone behind you in traffic.
When someone asks what it means
You don't need a speech. 'It's a mental health brand — it means a bad time doesn't have to finish you' is plenty. If they seem to be asking for themselves, ask back: 'How are you doing, honestly?' Then listen more than you talk.
If they say something that worries you — about not wanting to be here — ask directly. Asking about suicide doesn't put the idea in someone's head; it gives them permission to be honest.
