What is anti suicide clothing — and what should it actually do?
Anti suicide clothing means two very different things in the UK. Here's the difference between clinical anti-ligature garments and awareness streetwear — and how to judge whether a brand is doing anything real.
Type "anti suicide clothing" into Google and you get two completely separate categories sitting on the same page. One is clinical. One is streetwear. Knowing which you need takes about a minute, and it matters.
Clinical anti-ligature clothing
Anti-ligature garments are specialist products for hospital wards, secure units and custodial settings. They are made to tear away under load and have no fixed cords, drawstrings or loops. They are bought by clinical teams from medical suppliers, not from clothing brands.
HHSS does not make these. If that is what you are looking for, speak to a specialist medical supplier — a hoodie is not a substitute for a clinical product.
Awareness streetwear
The second category is everyday clothing that carries a suicide prevention message in public. It does two jobs: it makes the subject visible so somebody feels able to start a conversation, and — if the brand is honest about it — it moves money to the services that pick up the phone at 3am.
That is what HHSS makes. Heavy Heart, Strong Soul. Heavyweight, plain, built to be worn weekly rather than once.
How to judge a brand
Three questions cut through most of the marketing:
- Does money actually move, and is the amount stated per item rather than as a vague percentage?
- Is the garment good enough that it gets worn every week, not left in a drawer?
- Does the brand point to real support services rather than treating crisis as an aesthetic?
Where HHSS lands
£5 from every £55 hoodie, £3 from every £30 T-shirt, £2 from every £22 cap and £1 from every £5 car window sticker goes to Man Down UK. The donation is inside the price, so there is nothing to opt into at checkout and nothing to opt out of.
The hoodie is heavyweight loopback fleece. Oversized, boxy fit. Choose your usual size for the intended HHSS oversized fit. Size down for a closer fit. Sizes M–2XL. Drop 01 is live.
